The training is required by law for 14- and 15-year-olds so they can safely operate a tractor over 20 horsepower and other farm machinery.
In addition, all boys and girls 14 and 15 years old who want to hire out for neighbors or relatives must have a certificate that they have successfully completed the course.
The Tractor and Farm Safety Training Course began with classroom instruction on March 11 and 13 at Denison High School. On March 15 student were able to practice backing tractors with wagons and other equipment at the Northside Rec area located east of Denison High School.
Crawford County ISU Extension Education Director Coletta Weeda pointed out some students taking the Tractor and Farm Safety Training Course have experience driving tractors, but other youth have never driven a tractor.
Students in the course will have more classroom instruction on March 25 and 27.
On April 5 students will be tested in tractor driving by going through some of the same obstacle courses and backing drills they practiced on March 15.
