The Lewiston FFA Chapter has participated in many events this year. During the fall, at the beginning of school, the chapter did roadside pick-up.
Each year, the chapter cleans two miles of highway right outside of Lewiston. Also this year, the Lewiston FFA Chapter recognized Farm Safety Week, September 18th thought the 25th. Activities for Farm Safety Week included a coloring contest for the elementary, a workshop on safety on the farm, and a stop sign check. On October 13, members of the chapter attended the District Leadership Workshop hosted by Norris. The members worked on leadership and officer skills. The chapter’s annual bowling night at Tonka Lanes was held on November 19.
In January, members of the chapter competed at district LSEs at Southeast Community College. Chrissy Tremain received first place in Cooperative Speaking and will advance on to state in late March. Jordan Thomas came in fourth place in Employment Skills while Ashton Albers received a red ribbon for Creed Speaking. The Junior Parliamentary Team came in third place.
Members of the team included Ashton Albers, Katie Sisco, Nick Gaddy, Erica Thomas, Joey Burd, Kristin Wolken, and Sarah Mitchell.
The Lewiston FFA Chapter also recognized National FFA Week, February 18th to the 24th, with numerous activities. On Monday, members were given points for wearing their official dress. On Wednesday, members and ag students competed at district CDEs at Southeast Community College in Beatrice. The Lewiston Senior Livestock Judging Team qualified for state and will be competing there later on this month. The Junior Livestock Judging team also did well. Other areas of competition that the students competed in were natural resources, agriscience, welding, livestock management, and envirothon. On Thursday, Kindergarten through fourth grade came to the ag building for Kiddie Barnyard. Animals at the barnyard include baby goats, lambs, a miniature horse, a bottle calf, and chickens. Some of the members also put together a presentation about FFA and what it is. On Friday, the car show took place. To finish up the week, students in the school participated in the annual pitch tournament and the Ag Olympics.
The chapter had its annual fundraising meat and cheese sales right before Christmas. Also, the chapter sells candy and food after school.
Last summer the Lewiston FFA worked with the Monsanto company on a research project the company was doing related to corn rootworm beetles. The research involved putting traps out in soybean fields during peak times to determine the number of beetles that may be laying eggs in bean stubble, over wintering and then hatching and attacking the corn that often follows the beans in rotation. Members placed traps in the fields in late July and picked them up after a week. The members were then responsible for counting and identifying the insects. Monsanto showed their appreciation for the help by awarding fifty dollars to the chapter for each field surveyed.
On March 29th and 30th, members of the chapter attended and competed at state. Of those who competed were Chrissy Tremain in Cooperative Speaking, the senior livestock judging team, which consist of Brittany Thomas, Devon Tate, Daniel Mitchell, and Amy Weyers, and the natural resource team.
