Early in the morning on March 29th and 30th many members of the local FFA Chapter traveled to Lincoln to compete at State FFA Convention.  Members participating in the Leadership Skills Events (LSE) were Tracy Ballard in Job Interview and the Mead Ag Demonstration Team consisting of Tracy Ballard,   Jessica Guyle, Carol Miller and Adam Taylor.  Tracy prepared for the Job Interview competition much like one would prepare for applying for a real job.  She was required to write a letter of application and send it with her current resume prior to the competition.  Upon arrival at the contests site, Tracy was asked to complete a job application and participate in a 15 minute interview.  The ag demonstration team highlighted the planting and care of a buffalo grass lawn with tremendous help from Todd Valley Farm in their preparation for district and state competitions.    Both competitors in LSE’s received silver awards.
Other competitions which members participated in included the following Career Development Events (CDE):  Agriscience, Floriculture, Agricultural  Communications, Food Science.  See information below for results.

A big congratulation to Emily Garcia for being selected to participate in the State FFA Chorus.  The group sang both Thursday and Friday evening at the sessions held at Pershing Auditorium.  Also a special recognition to Tracy Ballard for being awarded the top Gold in the Nursery Operations proficiency award area.  Her application will be forwarded on to national competition.  Tracy was also recognized as a star placement finalist and received her State FFA Degree.

Aloha!  Members and guests of the Mead FFA found themselves in a Hawaiian paradise as they entered the banquet hall, greeted with a lei.  Tracy Ballard, chapter President, served as the MC for the FFA banquet held on Thursday, April 19th.  Keeping with the Hawaiian Luau theme, the meal consisted of roast pork, mashed potatoes with gravy, tropical fruit salad as well as many other types of delicious salads and desserts provided by members families.

After the banquet meal, members and community members were recognized for their accomplishments and support during the past year.  The guest speaker for the evening was Houston Moseman, 2006-07 State FFA President  from Hooper, NE.  Houston attended Logan View High School and is currently studying animal science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  He challenged students to reach 212 degrees with their efforts in anything they are involved in.  This number represents the temperature that water boils.  The message reminded the audience if we go above and beyond what is required, things will start to happen.

Members being recognized for their outstanding scholarship efforts include Jessica Guyle, Tracy Ballard, Adam Taylor, Allysia Selko, Annie Schoenherr, Sydney Vogt, Eric Johnson, Jordan Moline, Mariah Frahm, Heather Thorson, Carol Miller, Amy Wimer, Emily Garcia, Krissy Johnson,  and Nate Raver.  Outstanding leadership awards were awarded to Tim Hickman, Ashley Moravec, Carol Miller, Emily Garcia, Amy Wimer, Cassie Parsons and Brittany Sterup.

The evening concluded with the officer team presenting Mrs. Kocian and Mrs. Spath mementoes of the team and the installation of the 2007-08 officer team.  It was definitely an evening of good food, friends, and recognition.
