The Blair FFA Chapter attended the 74th annual FFA State convention in Lincoln March 28-30th. Every year the capital city is home to the state convention in the early spring. Many events are held on the East Campus, the Cornhusker Hotel, Pershing Auditorium, Southeast Community College, and the Lied Center. Events range from speech competitions to animal science events. Also, during the convention members attend sessions lead by the current state officers.
This year the state convention drew nearly 4,000 members and guests, making it the largest organization in Nebraska schools. The Blair chapter took 28 members ranging from freshmen to seniors, all of whom were qualified for the competitions following district events. With the events being filled with some of the most talented and promising youth in Nebraska, it is an honor to even receive a ribbon. This year the Blair chapter had a banner medal year. Brandon Hilger received the State FFA Degree, the highest honor the State Association can bestow. Two members received gold medals in the speech competition. Daniel Raider received a gold medal for fifth place in job interview, and Morgan Kobs won first place in Creed Speaking. By winning this competition, Morgan is entitled to participate in the event next fall at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Other top placing students received ribbons. Natural Resources: Jared Cape, Purple; Cody Beyer and Danny Ryan, Blues. Welding: Trevor Hilger, Blue. Senior Livestock Judging: Jonn Penke, Blue; Brandon Hilger, Red; David Anderson, White. Junior Livestock Judging: Kane Warren, Red. AgriScience: Geret Neiburg, Red. The Chapter also received the Governor's Excellence Award with a NIFA sponsored $2,500 grant that was applied to the High School Greenhouse project.
As the school year is winding down, the chapter is gearing up for the annual banquet on April 21st. New officers for next year will be selected as students and alumni look back on a memorable year in FFA, with many new friendships and accomplishments.
