National Slaughter Cattle Summary - Week Ending August 01, 2008
Compared to last week: Slaughter cattle have yet to trade for the most part.
Limited sales in Nebraska sold steady, instances 2.00 higher. Feedlots resisting
steady bids as the August contract moves over 5.00 higher than the current cash bid.
Feed yards also unwilling sellers as the current bids would keep them in the red.
Boxed beef prices averaging steady for the week after a short upswing on Tuesday.
Slaughter rates running even or slightly higher than a year ago.
Boxed beef cut-out values Friday morning averaged 155.01 down .53 from last
Friday. The choice/Select spread is currently at 6.70. Slaughter cattle on a
national basis for negotiated cash trades through Friday morning totaled only
36,300 head. Last week's movement totaled 121,285.
Midwest Direct Markets:
Live Basis: Steers and Heifers
35-80 Percent Choice, 1200-1400 lbs few 94.00.
Dressed Basis: Steers and Heifers
35-80 percent Choice, 800-950 lbs few 151.00-153.00, mostly 152.00.
High Plains Direct Markets:
Live Basis: Steers and Heifers
35-65 percent Choice, 900-1400 lbs few in Kansas 94.00.
Slaughter Cows and Bulls (Average Yielding Prices):
Slaughter cows and bulls 1.00-3.00 higher, except northern markets holding
steady. Markets mostly higher as packers fill needs for school lunch programs.
USDA's Cutter cow carcass cut-out value Friday morning was 141.51 down .59
from last Friday's close.
